On 20 April in Washington, the Mauritanian delegation participating in the annual meetings of the World Bank (WB) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) met with Mr. Kenji Okamura, the IMF’s deputy managing director, and Ms. Taline Koranchelian, the IMF’s Deputy Director at the Middle East and Central Asia Department.
Comprising, among others, Mr. Ousmane Mamoudou Kane, the Minister of Economic Affairs and Promotion of Productive Sectors, Mr. Isselmou Ould Mohamed M’Bady, the Minister of Finance, and Mr. Mohamed Lamine Ould Dhehbi, the Governor of the Central Bank of Mauritania (BCM), the delegation briefed Mr. Kenji Okamura on the reforms implemented by Mauritania in the areas of monetary policy and the programs and reforms undertaken by the government with the collaboration of the IMF.
The areas covered, which have been the subject of discussions in recent weeks in Nouakchott, have been discussed over the past two days with the IMF’s officials in Washington.
The IMF’s Deputy Managing Director praised the reforms undertaken by Mauritania in the areas of economic, financial, and monetary policies. He highlighted the good management of the debt files, particularly the Kuwaiti debt, which constituted a heavy burden on the public debt and the latest measure converting Saudi Arabia’s deposit with the BCM into a highly subsidized loan.
This meeting is the first of its kind between a delegation from our country and this senior IMF’s official who recently took up his post.
