National Mechanism for Prevention of Torture Visits Interior Regions’ Detention Centers

Teams from the National Mechanism for the Prevention of Torture (MNPT) started, Wednesday, visits to detention centers in the country’s interior regions to inquire about the conditions of prisoners, especially during this situation where the country is facing a second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Within this framework, MNPT set up 4 teams divided as follows: – The first, from the Atlantic coast to Trarza and Dakhlet Nouadhibou – The second for the southern regions of the country: Brakna, Gorgol, Guidimagha – The third for the northern regions: Inchiri, Adrar, Tiris Zemmour – The fourth for the regions of Assaba, the two Hodhs and Tagant. Through these visits, which were already preceded by visits to the three regions of Nouakchott, the MNPT will therefore have completed the visits to all the detention centers in the country. It should be noted that these visits were preceded by training of the MNPT members and by visits to the 4 prisons in Nouakchott in the period from December to early January.
