On 4 May in Nouakchott, Mr. Tomoya Obokata, the UN Special Rapporteur on Contemporary Forms of Slavery, visited the headquarters of the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH), where he was welcomed by its president, Mr. Ahmed Salem Ould Bouhebeini.
On the spot, the UN rapporteur inquired about the measures taken by Mauritania to eradicate contemporary forms of slavery and the achievement of the objectives of sustainable development, under the commitments made to put an end to traditional slavery, forced labor, and child labor.
The visit was an opportunity to gauge the action of the national commission on the national and international levels, on the one hand, and the echo aroused by the awareness-raising caravans it organized in the various wilayas of the country to make the legal, administrative, and associative circles about the need to combat the phenomenon, on the other hand.
